Tyndale was a time to make my Christian faith my own … it solidified that for me
S: I’m married to Jeff who also went to Tyndale. We were both there from kindy through to Year 12, 1993-2005. I guess you could say we were childhood sweethearts. We were married in 2013 and now we have a little girl named Sofia.
R: You’re a high school teacher, with plans to head overseas on mission. How did that come about?
S: After Jeff and I graduated we both went to uni. I did teaching which was sort of out of the blue but I was encouraged by another Tyndale friend. Following this I went to Sydney Missionary Bible College where I did a Graduate Diploma in Divinity.
I did some high school teaching, but I felt like the Lord was leading us to full-time ministry. At the time Jeff was working at an engineering company. We just thought we’d take that step and he’s been at Bible college part-time since 2017.
R: When and where are you planning to go overseas?
S: Hopefully this year we’ll get to the Philippines. Every year we keep saying that! It’s looking more possible now as borders reopen and with my Filipino background, I can get a Filipino passport.
R: Where did your calling to overseas mission come from?
S: We went on a Tyndale mission trip to Thailand in 2004, and that was when we believe the seeds were planted. But once you finish high school and uni, and get jobs, that ideal can get a little bit lost. Over time God has worked through different scenarios and moments to bring us back to that calling.
R: Could you sum up your time at Tyndale?
S: A really positive experience. I definitely valued the great teachers, to the point where I’m still in touch with a few of them. Tyndale was a time to make my Christian faith my own. Being from a Christian family and going to a Christian school does not necessarily mean that it will be the faith you follow. Tyndale solidified that for me. The relationships were key—particularly my friend circle, with which I’m still connected.
It also gave me a strong community spirit. Sure, this existed in my church circles and continued as I got older, but part of it was because of Tyndale where there was a real sense of community.
R: Do you have a favourite memory from school?
First, that mission trip to Thailand. It’s contested but I believe that was when Jeff and I became a couple! It was Year 11 and we were 16. On the last night, before flying back home, we all stayed up late and got out some random musical instruments. Music was a huge part of our school experience outside the classroom. There was a great band program when we were there and band camps were a highlight! I played the piano and flute and Jeff played drums, guitar and piano.
R: The school motto is ‘Serving the Lord with Gladness’. Is that something you’ve thought about both at school and since?
S: I think in senior school there were opportunities like the leadership camp at the end of year 11 that helped us understand what it means to serve God with gladness. After leaving, I would say the motto has translated to mean ‘joy in serving the Lord’. That doesn’t mean life is easier, but there is deep joy to be found in those times.
R: What has been the reaction of your family at the idea of you doing mission work?
S: Pretty mixed. They definitely understand the spiritual element and are thankful and proud we have affirming faith. I know they’ve secretly been happy that we’ve been here for the last three years – kept back by the pandemic. Yet they are supportive, encouraging, and making sure we pursue it the right way. But yes, they will be sad to see us go.
